Grant LeBeau, Rickaroons co-founder, on the importance of scaling your business, the start-up grind, and social impact
“I remember our very first sale was to this woman — she just had no idea how exciting it was for us to be selling in-person to a random person who wasn’t family or friend. We wanted to take a picture with her.
Grant LeBeau, Rickaroons
1. City of residence: San Diego
2. Place of birth: San Diego
3. In under five sentences, define your business:
Rickaroons are coconut energy bars that taste like dessert. My dad (Rick) and I started selling at a local farmers market 5 years ago. I am lucky enough to have two younger sisters helping grow the business, spreading beyond Southern California to juice bars, coffee shops, offices and gyms across the country. Our goal is to make on-the-go snacking a tasty AND healthy experience.
4. What social or environmental impact is your business making?
All of our ingredients are selected from suppliers who make sustainability and fair treatment of workers a top priority. One of our favorite suppliers not only pays 200% normal daily wages, they also literally plant rain forests.
5. Out of all the products you produce, which is your favorite? Why?
My favorite flavor is our Mint to Be. It’s double chocolate with a peppermint twist. Someone in a meeting last week called it a Thick Mint instead of the Thin Mint classic Girl Scout cookie.
6. What book(s) are you currently reading?
I get distracted easily so I usually am reading 4-5 books at once. Right now I am reading Fahrenheit 451 for the first time.
7. Quote you (try to) live by?
Don’t wish for it, work for it.
8. Using one word, how would you describe yourself?
Extroverted
9. What is one random fact that most people don’t know about you?
Every time I am in a new city I try to visit the best local ice cream shop.
